Josh Miller (MmM) First off I just want to say thank you very much for agreeing to come on and chat!
-
Fabian Nicieza My pleasure! Is it only us?
-
Fabian Nicieza Ask away!
-
Josh Miller (MmM) No no more folks will show up as we start it up!
-
Josh Miller (MmM) So my first question is when did you discover your passion for writing comics?
-
Fabian Nicieza I was reading them (well, trying to) since I was 4 or 5. I started drawing when I was like 6 or 7 and writing stories about what I drew when I was about 8, so, that’s pretty much when I started to “write,” but I knew I wanted to try and be a writer for “real” by the time I was 12 or so.
-
Josh Miller (MmM) How did you land your first gig as a writer?
-
Jake Zimmanck Thnx for comin by this means alot to us.. how was it writtin the merc w the mouth bet it was fun
-
Jake Zimmanck Do u like batman???
-
Fabian Nicieza I sold a “Guest Meanwhile” column to DC when I was in college. $25 bucks. Technically my first sale! I wrote a couple Marvel Age articles when I first started working on staff at Marvel in 1985. I sold my first story in late 86 but it was killed when a new editor took over the Spidey titles. Then my first sale that was printed was Psi-Force #9 in 1987.
-
Christopher Johnson Thanks for coming on Fabian! How has the industry changed in the 30 years that you’ve been involved.
-
Fabian Nicieza Jake: Batman is okay. I like Dick Grayson and Tim Drake more.
-
Fabian Nicieza Christopher: that’s a book, not a chat window answer! it has changed a lot and not at all!
-
Fabian Nicieza And it hasn’t been 30 years. Only 28.
-
Brian Isaacs Fabian, just curious, but what are your thoughts on some of the creative team-up shake ups at the big 2?
-
Fabian Nicieza I honestly don’t keep track, Brian. I was more interested in shake-ups that involved me. And I got pretty tired of those at DC.
-
Jake Zimmanck I hat batman
-
Josh Miller (MmM) 28 yes exactly long ive been alive lol
-
Brian Isaacs Understandable. I appreciate the honesty
-
Fabian Nicieza Brian: Creative teams have ALWAYS changed, artists have ALWAYS missed deadlines and required help. Writers have ALWAYS butted heads with editorial and been changed. The Internet turns into a greater awareness of that among some readers — and more talking — but it’s pretty much business as usual for the Big 2.
-
Josh Miller (MmM) What was it like in the 90’s working on all the x-men titles?
-
Christopher Johnson Has there ever been a story that you’ve written that editorial has wanted to change? I recall a Nomad comic that was pretty graphic with people being run over by cars.
-
Fabian Nicieza It was equal parts agony and ecstasy.
-
Fabian Nicieza Exciting to be working on top selling titles, getting all kinds of attention and making lots of money. Agony working in an editorial environment that simply wasn’t conducive to my ability to do my best work. Therefore, it was never my best work!
-
David Jenkins Hello Fabian. I just wanted to share my admiration for a lot of that work. Particularly in the X-Men book.
-
Tony Antoniuk Hi Fabian Nicieza, Thank you for taking time out of your holidays for this! Which artists that you haven’t worked with would most like to work with in the near future?
-
Fabian Nicieza I have had LOTS of changes required by editorial. Sometimes I agree (or at least understand), sometimes I don’t. Nomad was a book that endured a LOT of on-going issues, and I probably got away with more than another writer would have at that time simply because between my editing and writing I was selling almost 2 million comics a month for Marvel.
-
Fabian Nicieza Tony: wow, that question would have SO many people on the list, I can’t even begin to answer it because the list would be too long!
-
Jake Zimmanck Did u write any of the age og apocalypse? ?
-
Christopher Johnson Nomad is one of my favorites that you’ve done!
-
Josh Miller (MmM) Im glad you mention sales. Why do you think sales are not nearly what they use to be?
-
Fabian Nicieza Jake: Yes. A huge amount of it.
-
Josh Miller (MmM) Jake loves AOA!
-
Fabian Nicieza Josh: well, as we have heard a million times since then, of course in the early 90s there were only 10 readers all buying 300,000 copies of each book.
-
Jake Zimmanck I love u if i ever met u id prolly open mouth kiss u thats my favorite marvel story
-
Fabian Nicieza Josh: real answer: there were more readers. More YOUNG readers. More sales outlets. That equaled more sales.
-
David Jenkins Were you working in the Cable book at the time of AoA?
-
Brian Isaacs What are you currently working on Fabian?
-
Christopher Johnson Did you expect Deadpool to be such a huge success? and how awesome is it to create such an iconic character?
-
Jake Zimmanck What cons do u usually hit up
-
Fabian Nicieza I quite Cable around issue #8, so no.
-
Michael Hopkins what was your favorite comic to write and what is your dream comic to write?
-
Jab Along Hi Fabian. Also a big fan of AoA. I’m wondering how does a big crossover project like that come about. With many books and creative teams involved, is it driven from the top, the different writers brainstorming together, etc?
-
Fabian Nicieza Brian: not much in comics right now. Just finished a small assignment for an issue of DEADPOOL that was a lot of fun. I have a fulltime job at Starlight Runner Ent. We do IP management for Hollywood, video game & toy companies and consumer brand products.
-
Jake Zimmanck To bad my buddy Shaun Murdock is sleepin AoA is his favorite too!!
-
Fabian Nicieza Michael: New Warriors was the most fun I had, at least for the first 3 years. Cable & Deadpool, too, even though that was always tough because we never knew if we’d be alive every 6 issues!
-
Tony Antoniuk To be honest I stopped buying comics when DC took a dump on it’s readers and changed everything again but I shouldn’t have neglected Marvel. I used to buy just about every DC Marvel book that came out every month. If I was to start buying comics again Fabian, which one book of yours would you recommend to me to buy? Just one to start.
-
Fabian Nicieza Jab: crossover ideas come from lots of different sources, AoA came from Bob Harras having a particularly interesting shower.
-
Jake Zimmanck Gotta get back to work thank u for ur time and thank u for ur work on AoA and 1 of my favorites deadpool
-
Fabian Nicieza Jake: I don’t do too many cons anymore. None planned right now for 2014.
-
Fabian Nicieza You’re welcome, Jake. Thanx for stopping by.
-
Jake Zimmanck Lololololol shower time FTW!!!!
-
Josh Miller (MmM) That must have been one hell of a shower lol
-
Josh Miller (MmM) You have been a part of a lot of great X-Men stories what was your favorite?
-
Fabian Nicieza Tony: I don’t write any current books. You can’t go wrong buying the Ultimate Deadpool & Cable trade paperbacks. 3 volumes covers the 50 issue series run.
-
Jake Zimmanck Well how am i spose to kiss u if i cant see u at a con lol dont make find u a stalk u lol
-
Brian Isaacs No insult meant, but do you feel Rob Liefeld gets a bad rap sometimes?
-
Fabian Nicieza Josh: I didn’t ask details. He just came in very freshly scrubbed and said, “What if Xavier died in the past? What would have happened to mutants then?”
-
Tony Antoniuk Okay thank you! What are you working on at this moment that I can go out and purchase then?
-
Fabian Nicieza Josh: I don’t have a favorite X-Men story. Just a lot of frustration about stories I think should have been better. I was pretty proud of my short run on X-Force with Gregg Capullo. That one holds up for me.
-
Jab Along Is AoA a story you were satisfied with or one of the ones you thought could have been better? Have you followed the stories that have revisited it and the AoA characters over the years?
-
David Jenkins When Cable was developed was he always envisioned as Cyclops list son? I am quite fuzzy on the timeline details.
-
Fabian Nicieza I had a very short story in X-MEN GOLD that came out in November. A digital ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN story I wrote will be available for downloading in January. That’s it, I’m not a hot commodity for current comic book editors.
-
David Jenkins Lost not list.
-
Fabian Nicieza Jab: I was never happy with AoA. I understand a lot of readers liked it, and that’s fine, but I didn’t. And no, I have followed none of what was done more recently with the AoA concept.
-
Tony Antoniuk Not sure if I’m supposed to like that post or not. lol
-
Fabian Nicieza David: No. Rob had an entire gameplan for Cable that was kind of usurped when Jim and Whilce suggested he be Cyclops’ son and Bob liked that idea. But Rob and Jim left for Image before they were ever required to develop that, so I got stuck with an idea that wasn’t mine (or Rob’s) to begin with!
-
Josh Miller (MmM) You didn’t like AOA? That is crazy!!
-
Jab Along Really, you didn’t like AoA? Good thing Jake’s left, he’d have a heart attack! I gotta say I loved it too. Why weren’t you happy with it?
-
Fabian Nicieza Tony: there is no shortage of comics with my name in them that you can find. I’ve written over 700 of them for Marvel, DC and Dark Horse over the years, not even counting the trade paperback collections…
-
Fabian Nicieza Josh: I could just as easily say the same thing to you for liking it.
-
Josh Miller (MmM) HAHA
-
David Jenkins Ahh, that explains a lot. When was that decision made? before his introduction, or after he was in the books awhile.
-
Tony Antoniuk I have New Warriors, Trinity and X-Force so I guess I’m going to have to get the Cable & Deadpool trades. Does it have to do with DC being garbage now and Marvel being bought by Disney that you aren’t writing for them?
-
Jake Zimmanck Yea man loved and still love AoA
-
Christopher Johnson Was Iceman being an omega level mutant your idea from X-Men Forever? and how did that Story come about?
-
Tony Antoniuk What Darkhorse projects if you don’t mind tlling me?
-
Josh Miller (MMM) Do you follow any of the characters that you created?? And do you ever get pissed when other creators use them and do something totally out of character??
-
Fabian Nicieza Jab: not worth getting into, and I haven’t read any of those issues in 20 years, so the details of what I liked, didn’t like, thought should have worked better, etc. are lost to the fog of time. I was mostly disenfranchised with stuff happening behind the scenes and the way the story was planned (or not planned as the case may be) and what the plans (or lack thereof) coming out of AoA was going to be. It was too much flying by the seat of pants to suit my preferences. But… if you enjoyed it, great, that means at least we did our jobs for you.
-
Tony Antoniuk http://www.comicvine.com/fabian…/4040-41350/issues-cover/Fabian Nicieza has mostly written at Marvel and is co-creator of Deadpool, Shatt…See More
-
Fabian Nicieza Josh: I made a decision a long time ago that if I quit or get fired from a book that I won’t follow it unless I have to for another writing assignment. So… I didn’t read New Warriors by Evan Skolnick (who was one of my best friends!) for almost 10 years after it has come out! Haven’t read any Deadpool since they cancelled my book, no Thunderbolts…
-
Josh Miller (MmM) I know all around the same time you were writing a lot of series at the same time. How do you manage to do that? And does the company just toss you projects and say do this or did you have a choice?
-
Fabian Nicieza Life is too short to be angry about things you have no control over.
-
Tony Antoniuk Why did Wonderman get cancelled? I loved that series.
-
Fabian Nicieza Josh: at one time I was writing 7 monthly books AND I had a fulltime editorial job. That was kind of crazy. I let the editorial stuff slide, came in 2 days a week and my assistant, Evan, had the brunt of the work (not fair, but it helped him earn a well deserved promotion!).
-
Josh Miller (MmM) Got ya they are bringing back New Warriors that has me excited
-
Fabian Nicieza I would be offered a LOT of work I turned down. I had 4 core books: New Warriors, X-Men, X-Force and Nomad at that time. Then I wanted to do the New Warriors and X-Force spin-offs, so that’s how it grew to 7.
-
Jab Along When you look back at stuff you’ve done, is it hard to separate the work itself from the experience of working on it, with the coworkers, the dramas, the politics, etc? Or can you look back and just appreciate what you think has held up, irrespective of whatever negatives there might have been at the time making it.
-
Fabian Nicieza Tony: sales weren’t good enough, plain and simple.
-
Tony Antoniuk You’re killing me here Fabian Nicieza!!!! LOL!
-
David Jenkins Ok another big event you were involved with was the Wedding of Scott and Jean, which could have come across as corny or overly sappy, but I think you did a nice job of balancing out that and making it meaningful. what was your take on that from behind the scenes?
-
Brian Isaacs Fabian, with all the book you did, it seemed like you really hit the deadlines
-
Fabian Nicieza Josh: I like Chris Yost and feel if anyone other than me could get that book right, it would be him. But it still should be me.
-
Josh Miller (MmM) Chris Yost is one of my favorite writers. Did you keep up with his X-Force run?
-
Fabian Nicieza Jab: impossible not to intertwine the two. Because so much of that OTHER stuff affects the work — especially back then, since I was working IN the office every day 9-5, responsible for so many things other than just writing and interacting with my editors and co-writers on a daily basis in a variety of ways, so separating the two is impossible for stuff from back then. A bit easier in the last 10 years when I was strictly a freelance writer, but even then, stuff gets sticky.
-
Jab Along As a writer, how do you feel about reading your own stuff? Once it’s done is that it or are you someone who enjoys going back and reading some of it? I guess as a writer on a series, you have to keep going back for reference, but I’m thinking once it’s over and especially say years later.
-
Sam Johnson Would love to get involved in this – as anyone that knows me knows, I’m a huge Deadpool fan – but it’s 2:40am here in the UK, so I look forward to reading the finished chat. Have fun!
-
Fabian Nicieza Jab: I have recently been looking back at some runs of my own work, first time seeing some of it in 20 years, trying to read it purely to see how it holds up. Some of it does (first 4 years of New Warriors, X-Force with Capullo, individual X-specials, some issues of Nomad) but a lot of it is just me gnashing my teeth wishing I could rewrite it now!
-
Fabian Nicieza Get to sleep Sam!
-
Traci Rodriguez Fabian Hiiiiiiii
Here’s my question.
What is the BEST pizza topping when writing?
(College kid question lol) -
Fabian Nicieza Traci: who the hell eats pizza while they’re writing? I can’t afford a greasy laptop!
-
Josh Miller (MmM) I eat pizza at least twice a day lol
-
Fabian Nicieza Come to think of it, I have rarely ever eaten anything while I write. Just coffee or water.
-
Traci Rodriguez omg are u serious?
pizza is brain food! -
Fabian Nicieza At my age, pizza is stomach and ass food.
-
Josh Miller (MmM) HAHA
-
Fabian Nicieza As in it makes both bigger!
-
Traci Rodriguez fables ya gotta try it once.
-
Josh Miller (MmM) How was it writing the best comic book character ever made Gambit?
-
Jab Along As your first series I take it, what are your feelings about Psi-Force? The New Universe came out just as I got into comics, so I was really into it at the time as I felt like it was something I could own as a fan. Some of the titles didn’t really make much of an impression on me, but I liked Psi-Force and the characters have lingered positively in my mind.
-
Tony Antoniuk New Warriors was one of my favorite titles. I love that you also did Teen Titans. Which group of teens was easier to write?
-
Fabian Nicieza Josh: I really enjoyed the first year with Steve Skroce, who I think is an absurdly talented storyteller and an artist who really kept me on my toes and kept me energized with his collaboration.
-
Tony Antoniuk Thanks Traci Rodriguez! Now I want pizza!
-
Josh Miller (MmM) He is my favorite character. When you did the AOA storyline did you get to pick what tie ins you wanted to do? Or did they just pick them for you?
-
Fabian Nicieza Jab: I will always remember PSI-FORCE and the New U fondly because it was my first monthly gig. I got to work with Ron Lim who is a sweetheart and great pro and I back very good friends with Howard Mackie and Mark Gruenwald, who really supported and encouraged me and helped me “shift” over to mainstream Marvel once NewU was done.
-
Tony Antoniuk LOL Josh Miller!!!! Gambit is by far the best character.
-
Fabian Nicieza Tony: I’ve never gotten to write a Teen Titans book that was “mine” so the answer has to be New Warriors!
-
Fabian Nicieza Josh: stop asking me questions about AoA. You are giving me “recall heartburn.”
-
Tony Antoniuk Maybe you can in the future then?
-
Fabian Nicieza Tony: that would be up to the editors at DC, not me.
-
David Jenkins What book that is being published now would you like to be working on?
-
Tony Antoniuk Well then, time for me to send them letters. LOL
-
Jab Along About the New Universe, while understandable as its own universe, always thought it was a shame that when it was done, that was the end of the line for all the characters. Was there ever any thought then or since that you’re aware of to have any of those characters cross over to the main universe. That’s happened since with some AoA characters and maybe others, notably using The Exiles’ universe-hopping as a vehicle.
-
Brian Isaacs Fabian, do you feel that you had more Nomad stories in you? That was the impression I kind of got in the Thunderbolts
-
Traci Rodriguez That hard hitting journalism Tony
Fabian do you have a nickname? If so would you please share it? If no Im thinkin about ‘fables’? That would be too kick ass! -
Fabian Nicieza David: From the Big 2? Hmm. I would have always loved a shot at a monthly Captain America or Dr. Strange book. I would still love to be writing Deadpool. Even taking into account it’s New52, I would likely still kill to write Nightwing or Red Robin.
-
Josh Miller (MmM) But I hearted AOA!! What character aside from Deadpoool are you most proud of creating?
-
Fabian Nicieza Jab: they did some New Universe thing with Warren Ellis years ago, right? And didn’t Hickman do something with the concepts recently? I don’t follow, so it was just glimpses at news feeds.
-
Fabian Nicieza Brian: I’ve never left a book because I lacked stories to tell. Nomad was cancelled on me. Thunderbolts I was fired from like 3 times!
-
Tony Antoniuk Josh Miller ‘s daisy dukes and cowboy boots! Not to mention Gambit. Ugh.
-
Fabian Nicieza Traci: unfortunately, my name alone was odd enough that it never engendered nicknames. It’s been shortened to Fabe a lot and Mark Gruenwald and Tom DeFalco used to call me Fabulous Fabe or just “The Fabulous One,” but I always assumed that was just out of respect.
-
David Jenkins I think you would kill on a Dr Strange book. That idea’s bananas.
-
Tony Antoniuk Missing hockey for this Joshy poo so you better be nice!
-
Jab Along Yes, haven’t read it, but Ellis did “newuniversal”, which lasted about a year and was a reimagining of New Universe but still as its own universe. Just seemed like some of those characters were pretty good and a shame they couldn’t somehow transition to the main universe and live on.
-
Tony Antoniuk It’s getting close to 10pm so I still need to know at least 3 artists you would love to work on your stories? Just 3 even???
-
David Jenkins Ok so I’m not a huge Deadpool fan, but was he always thought of as this black comedy type character? If not do you approve of his evolution?
-
Josh Miller (MMM) Is there a story you only got to do for a few issues or just a one shot you wished you could’ve continued on ??
-
Fabian Nicieza Josh: There were several characters I created that I WISH I’d had the chance to do more with because I knew in my gut they were going to BECOME really great characters, but they weren’t great right off the bat. Oddball things, iike Adam-X, the X-treme, who had sucha GREAT backstory to tell that I never got a chance to and some great sample pages by Jeff Johnson for a limited series that never got off the ground. X-Men was the cemetery for “potential” — geez, Threnody, Empyrean, a whole bunch of stuff that got aborted due to editorial impatience.
-
Traci Rodriguez FIRST PERSON TO TELL FABLES HAPPY EARLY BIRTHDAY(DEC 31ST) GETS TO BE AWESOME!!!!
Happy early birthday Fabian -
Fabian Nicieza Tony: Walt Simonson. George Perez. Leonardo Manco. There’s 3 (of 300!)
-
Josh Miller (MMM) To make Adam X the third summers brother was that your idea??
-
David Jenkins Thanks for taking the time to hang with us. I need to go as my phone is going to die..
-
Fabian Nicieza David: I haven’t read any Deadpool books since I stopped writing him, so I couldn’t tell you. DP was never meant to be a comedy character, he was meant to be a tragic adventure character who used comedy as a cover for his tragedy. So if he’s not being that, then he’s not really being handled as he should be…
-
Tony Antoniuk Two of my favorites whom I follow and talk to. Nice! Two who got me into comics.
-
Fabian Nicieza Josh: I did a Soviet Super Soldiers story that I really think would have made a good monthly book. I also did a Two Gun Kid limited series that I would have loved to evolve into a monthly series.
-
Jab Along Fabian, how do you feel about comics evolving, at least for some readers anyway, into electronic books on tablets and the like?
-
Josh Miller (MmM) Two Gun Kid was my shit!!
-
Fabian Nicieza Josh: yes. He was created as the 3rd brother and to this day, he is unfairly maligned because no one got to see what he could have been…
-
Fabian Nicieza David: thanks for stopping by.
-
David Jenkins Love Walt, I’m amazed you never got to work with him.
-
Josh Miller (MmM) Ya he is hardly ever used.
-
Fabian Nicieza Traci: that would be you, so you are therefore, AWESOME!
-
Brian Isaacs Fabian, Deadpool – The Circle Chase is one of my favorite stories.
-
Tony Antoniuk You aren’t old enough to remember Two Gun KidJosh Miller!
-
Josh Miller (MmM) I buy some older comics Tony keep it down
-
Brian Isaacs Josh, the 80’s don’t count as older
-
Traci Rodriguez whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat. Fabian just said I was awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think im a geek girl now -
Tony Antoniuk But that’s not an X-Men title Josh. I’m shocked! It must have to do with the cow tipping.
-
Fabian Nicieza Jab: I have ZERO problems with advancements in the delivery system for the content. Whether it be print, monthly comics, trade paperbacks, digital, hologram, monks with scrolls or messenger pigeons, whatever gets comics into people’s hands is fine with me.
-
Josh Miller (MmM) Brian im sorry im not dirt!!
-
Tony Antoniuk Is that a crack at me Josh? I’m not that old.
-
Jake Zimmanck Isnt it padt ur bedtime old timer
-
Josh Miller (MmM) You mentioned before that not having young readers is a big reason that sales are not what they use to be. How do you think the industry could pull those young readers back in?
-
Fabian Nicieza Can we just accept that I’m the oldest guys here so listening to the rest of you whine about age will only serve to depress me…?
-
Traci Rodriguez me too. Punk @$$ kids
-
Tony Antoniuk Aren’t the movies bringing the kids in to stores to buy comics now? You aren’t that old Fabian. LOL
-
Fabian Nicieza Entry level comics on iPads and iphones using mainstream Marvel or DC heroes as introductory and interactive readers. Then flow that to links for other comics as they get older. Kids are on digital devices, period, so that’s how you have to get them hooked.
-
Tony Antoniuk To get away from comics for a minute, do you collect figures or statues of your favorite comic characters? I would to see some New Warriors figures made.
-
Fabian Nicieza Tony: the last time the movies really helped comic book shops was in 1988 for Batman. The more recent movies have helped create movement in book stores for TPBs, I think, but not as much for comics in stores, though since i’m not on “the inside” I’m not privy to more detailed info.
-
Tony Antoniuk You must have a Nightwing or Tim Drake Robin figure or statue? Even a Deadpool maybe?
-
Josh Miller (MmM) You need to tell Marvel to let you do your own stories the way you wanted to kinda like X-Men forever because sounds like there is some great stuff we missed out on
-
Fabian Nicieza Tony: on my office shelves I have a LOT of Superman and Batman & Robin stuff, from the 40’s to present day stuff. I have Marvel stuff, Mego figures, Toy Biz figures as well.
-
Fabian Nicieza Josh: I’m not a big fan of “what I woulda done” after the fact. What’s in print is what it is. Period. Everything else is just kind of – pardon the french — creative masturbating.
-
Brian Isaacs Mego’s just rock
-
Tony Antoniuk My LCS says they make most of their money from comics but maybe it’s not the same in the US.
-
Josh Miller (MmM) What was it like working with the other creators from the 90’s??
-
Tony Antoniuk We would love to see your collection some time!
-
Fabian Nicieza Tony: Between books, toys and collectibles, I have about 100 Batman & Robin items on my shelf. Same amount of Superman as well.
-
Josh Miller (MMM) and now my heart is broken!!
-
Traci Rodriguez Tony did you tell Fabian about my cross country documentary on ppls collections??????? He should be on it papi!
-
Fabian Nicieza Tony: yes, comics still make comic shops the most $, but it’s a fraction of what they used to sell, and it’s become 50% of the company’s revenue (with TPBs and HCs and now digital taking a bigger slice of the pie in the last 5-10 yrs).
-
Brian Isaacs Without naming names Fabian, are there any Batman writers that just made you say “What the F**K are you doing?”
-
Tony Antoniuk Unfortunately, I have a ton myself. I can’t display everything due to space. I know this is a Marvel group but I love to see the diversity of collectables from the people in the business.
-
Fabian Nicieza Josh: Honestly I am still and always have been MMM, but Superman and Robin were REAL early childhood seminal influences and the core of my collecting beliefs, plus there’s just some super cool old shit you can score, like 1940s Superman pins, etc.
-
Tony Antoniuk Superman FTW!!!
-
Josh Miller (MmM) When you created Deadpool did you guys expect him to be as popular as he is now??
-
Jab Along Fabian, do you get into the DC and/or Marvel cartoons?
-
David Jenkins ok i made it to a computer.
-
Fabian Nicieza I came to this country recognizing Superman, Batman and Robin and it was when the Batman TV show was on. Then a kid at school told my brother to “try these cooler comics” and that was Marvel — and then it was pretty much ONLY Marvel all through the 70s (though I always snuck some DCs in like Legion and Robin stuff, then Englehart/Rogers Detective).
-
Fabian Nicieza Josh: not as popular with mainstream awareness as he is now — jeez, my daughter and her friends are seeing Deadpool stuff all over Hot Tropic, but we knew back then from IMMEDIATE reaction that readers really liked him. He was a change of pace from the usual angst of the X-Books of the time.
-
Josh Miller (MmM) Ya I got my oldest a Deadpool hoodie you zip it all the way up and its his outfit and the hood is the mask!
-
Fabian Nicieza Jab: I don’t watch EVERYTHING but I loved the Timm Batman and Superman stuff of the 90s. Liked a lot of the DC direct to video movies, though not all. Just recently started binge-watching Yost’s AVENGERS cartoon on Netflix and I think it’s REALLY good.
-
Josh Miller (MMM) Well if you don’t keep up with him I hope you didn’t see what they did to him in the Wolverine movie
-
Brian Isaacs Fabian thoughts on Grant Morrison’s run on Batman?
-
David Jenkins Yost’s Avengers cartoon was too good. i knew it wouldn’t last.
-
Fabian Nicieza Josh: oh, I’m quite aware of what they did in Wolverine Origins. Hopefully, they get it right the next time he appears in a movie.
-
Josh Miller (MmM) Well im sorry you had to witness that!
-
Fabian Nicieza Brian: I think Grant is such a fascinating writer, that anything he does is usually very interesting to read. I don’t always agree with his choices for mainstream characters, but I always respect the thought and integrity he puts into the work. So, short answer: I thot his Batman run had a LOT of cool stuff in it!
-
Josh Miller (MmM) Are there any up and coming writers who you are huge fans of?
-
Brian Isaacs Really??
-
Fabian Nicieza I honestly don’t read enough current stuff to have a pulse for that. I loved Jason Aaron’s SCALPED series, but I don’t think you could call him “up and coming” at this point, right? Hasn’t he done a lot of mainstream marvel work?
-
Jab Along Have you ever tried or wanted to write for animation? Seems like an even tougher business than comic books these days, with great shows lucky to get past a season or two in recent years.
-
Fabian Nicieza Brian: really.
-
Josh Miller (MmM) Jason aaron is amazing and yes he does! Scalped is one of the best stories ive read in along time
-
Fabian Nicieza Jab: I did a little animation work for a HOT WHEELS series 10 years ago. It was enough to teach me they don’t pay enough for the headaches they cause.
-
Fabian Nicieza Josh: if only it could have been a part of AOA…
-
Bryan Armstrong Do you think that any of your stories could be used as the basis for a future X-Men movie? If so, which one would you like to see get the big screen treatment?
-
Brian Isaacs I really feel Morrison is an idea man, but can’t put those into a story
-
Dave Long When you “birthed” the merc with a mouth did you expect or even dream that he would become the off the wall/crazy character that he is today?
-
Fabian Nicieza I think if the X-Force movie comes out and does well, a big screen X-Cutioner’s Song could work. I also think AoA could work as a movie, too. I honestly don’t care that much except to make sure Deadpool is in anything they do, because then I get a check.
-
Traci Rodriguez YOOOOOOOOOOO!! I just wikipedia’d Fabian (To try an ask a Brian style question) but did Yall know my man grew up in NEW JERSEY !!!!!!!!! And AND HE WENT TO SCHOOL IN RUTGERS!!!!!! Fables was it rutgers CAMDEN???????
-
Fabian Nicieza Dave: not to the point where the comedy comes before everything else. I think that’s not the point of the character, but, if it’s selling, they’ll keep doing it, as they should.
-
Josh Miller (MMM) So if they use any character you created do you get paid for that?
-
Fabian Nicieza No, New Brunswick, Traci. But that was a long time ago before cars existed.
-
Tony Antoniuk Canada, Eh?
-
Fabian Nicieza New Brunswick campus… New Jersey, Tony. Rutgers is the state college of New Jersey…
-
Elijiah Ellis Being in the same boat of not reading current deadpool and loving the tragic jester shielded original would you if ever given the chance bring back what i loved about him ?
-
Tony Antoniuk Boooooooooooooooooo. lol
-
Brian Isaacs So you much loooove what Christie is trying to do to your alma mater Fabian
-
Tony Antoniuk Walt and George seem like they have been working forever Jab Along. So maybe it’s harder for writers?
-
-
Tony Antoniuk Traci Rodriguez! Really?
-
Fabian Nicieza I think writers do more than artists. Ageism is a reality for both disciplines, but I think writers tend to have shorter “life spans” than artists do. Because I’ve struggled to get work from the Big 2 in recent years, I looked at it with a detatched perspective, realizing that of all the writers who broke in between 1986-1989, which was my window when I started, only a few of my peers still get regular work.
-
Brian Isaacs I’ve stuck in NJ for 17 yrs now. Still trying to get out
-
Fabian Nicieza Elijah: well, I just wrote a couple of 5 page chapters for an upcoming regular issue of Deadpool, so you’ll get to see that. I don’t know what issue # or when it comes out, but I’m sure Marvel will have a publicity push for it just based on who is involved and what the story is about. A lot of fun!
-
Tony Antoniuk That’s really sad! The writers from that era are some of the best! The reason I don’t read the stuff now.
-
Fabian Nicieza Brian: got you beat. I’ve been stuck here since 1968!
-
Josh Miller (MmM) Do you still chat with your colleagues from that era??
-
Brian Isaacs You have my sympathy Fabian
-
Fabian Nicieza Tony: every era and generation have their creative strengths and weaknesses. I try to be really objective about all of that, not emotional. I read my old comics all the time and love/hate stuff in equal portions. Same with newer stuff now.
-
Josh Miller (MMM) When you were asked to do the X-Men Gold issue did you jump on board right away? I know some writers hold grudges and what not
-
Tony Antoniuk I wish I could be that objective Fabian. I grew up reading comics with my Father. He died when I turned 13 so the older comics means more to me than the newer ones. And I really hate the NU52 with a passion!
-
Fabian Nicieza For example: I recently re-read Waid’s Cap run from the 90s and I flowed that right into the HC of the first 6 issues of his new Daredevil run. THe Cap stuff didn’t hold up as strongly as I remembered it, but I thot the DD book was GREAT. Mark was clea…See More
-
Fabian Nicieza Just a few more minutes gang. Gotta go get my beauty sleep by 10:40.
-
Brian Isaacs Thoughts on Gov Christie???
-
Jab Along So why do you think that is that writers over time get left behind by the industry more so than artists? Do artists get more credit for past success than writers?
-
Tony Antoniuk What do you think of Rob Ford? LOL!
-
Fabian Nicieza Josh: I jumped at the chance because I wanted to write for Marvel again, plus being in a book with Chris, Walt, Louise, etc. — but even more importantly to me, not being too schmaltzy, was being a part of the 30th anniversary and getting the chance again for the 50th was an honor.
-
Fabian Nicieza Brian: not a big fan of the big guy but I try to keep politics out of my comic book conversations. You always end up alienating someone no matter what.
-
Elijiah Ellis Fabian thanks for answering my question and for being awesome !!
-
Fabian Nicieza Tony: I liked Rob Ford better when he was named Chris Farley.
-
Brian Isaacs LOL!! Good call Fabian!
-
Tony Antoniuk LMAO!
-
Tony Antoniuk Me too!
-
Josh Miller (MmM) Well Fabian Nicieza we will let you get out of here. But man thank you for coming on it has been a great time
-
Fabian Nicieza Jab: i think it is and has always been a collaborative medium, so usually accolades are or should be dosed out in equal measures. I loved Lee/Kirby on FF, not one or the other. I loved Marv/George on TT. Etc.
-
Jab Along Good zinger to head out on. Like George Costanza, always leave on a laugh!
-
Tony Antoniuk I guess it’s time for your beauty sleep. Thank you for your time!
-
Fabian Nicieza Hey gang, it’s been a lot of fun. Josh just has to go snuggle in bed with his AoA comics! Hope we can do this again sometime!
-
Fabian Nicieza Have a good night all!
-
Christopher Johnson Thanks for taking the time to talk with us!
-
Dave Long Thank you Fabian Nicieza for all the awesome insight. You may not have answered my question but you are the creator of my favorite character of all time. So, just to see your comments is enough for me. Thank you and have a safe and happy new year!
-
Tony Antoniuk Don’t forget to show us your collection!!!
-
-
Traci Rodriguez on tracis documentry^^^^^
-
Bryan Armstrong Thanks for the Q&A, always great to hear your replies to our questions!
-
Tony Antoniuk He answered you Dave Long:
Fabian Nicieza Dave: not to the point where the comedy comes before everything else. I think that’s not the point of the character, but, if it’s selling, they’ll keep doing it, as they should.
Elijiah Ellis Josh thanks for organizing this , it kicked ass !!
-
Dave Long Oh thanks. Didn’t see it. Dealing with a crying baby and messaging at the same time. Lol thank you Fabian Nicieza I am more grateful than you can understand!
-
-
Josh Miller (MmM) You’re welcome folks. One of my favorites!
-
Shaun Chillz Murdock (Mmm) Wow just wow!!! Fabian thanks so so much for this. Due to time zones, holiday period and a whole
Lot of rum I couldn’t keep my ass awake. However as Sam mentioned it was great to read back.

Iron Man 3 New figures revealed.
Thanks to Dominic Peluso via the Make Mine Marvel Facebook group. Now also posted to Marvelous news.
This is a yet to be released 3.75 scale Iron Man 3 figure set. Although this is essentially a re pack and re paint, there is finally a mk42 with decent articulation. But to top that off FINALLY A TONY STARK FIGURE!!!
There was a previous Tony Stark released in the IM2 set Undercover Assault. This was a Target exclusive that beer saw the light o day. However it did show up at discount store TK Maxx in the Uk. Obviously that sparked a mad bidding war on eBay. I was lucky enough to find that set, was ok. The Black Widow figure was a real let down. Really small and a nasty looking head sculpt. I had the Heads casted and sold the set on.
This leaves me wondering whether this set will follow the same suit??? Will it see the shelves??? Can we finally have a Tony Stark???? Only time will tell. This one is rumoured to be a Disney Store Exclusive, and with Disney buying the rights to previous IM films we can only hope they will do right by us and release it!!!

MMM Q&A With Paul Davidson
https://www.facebook.com/groups/Makemine/doc/398279460288474/
(MMM) OK Marvel Fans Please give a warm MMM welcome to arti
-
Shaun Chillz Murdock (MMM) Welcome Paul, thanks so much for coming on and chatting with us.
-
Paul Davidson My pleasure…….great to be here
Shaun Chillz Murdock (MMM) First off then. What got you started in comics??
-
Paul Davidson Probably a boring answer..always read them as a kid, and when i thought i was ‘maybe’ a good enough artist i started sending work to publishers……..firstly 2000AD with me being from the UK
-
Jake Zimmanck Thnx brother….whats ur favorite marvel or DC?
Shaun Chillz Murdock (MMM) Nice something you always wanted to do then??? How long have you been in the industry now then??
-
Paul Davidson No brainer…….Marvel
-
Dionisis Tavakis Welcome Paul and thank you for being with us.what was your first Marvel title you’ve worked?
Jake Zimmanck And u love batman as much everbody but me lol
-
Paul Davidson Comics was always a fantasy of mine……started drawing them in my early 20’s but my first big job was for Warhammer Monthly from Games Workshop in the 90’s…..long time
-
Paul Davidson Dionisis Tavakis New Mutants
-
Shaun Chillz Murdock (MMM) Oh sweet!!! My lil bro Stuart Murdock would be stoked to hear that!!! White Dwarf right???
-
Paul Davidson Warhammer Monthly was the comic they brought out in the 90’s i created a series for them called ‘DwarfLords…….still some of my favourite drawing
-
Dionisis Tavakis Awesome do you keep a special character in your heart from your first work.In this case New Mutants.Or maybe a character in a story that you will always remember working?
-
Aitch Cee Paul…like us…do you own any marvel toys?
-
Shaun Chillz Murdock (MMM) Sweet. Ya can’t move for war hammer at my Bros place. Lol.
-
Paul Davidson Not quite, as i have characters that i’d love to draw, but haven’t much……i’ve drawn Wolverine as a little cameo, but i’d love to draw a series
-
Dionisis Tavakis So,i guess Logan is your favorite Marvel character?
-
Paul Davidson Aitch Cee I have this awesome Spiderman…it’s huge, with tons of articulation…..the ultimate reference……bought it a long time ago, you probably know which one i’m referring to?
-
Shaun Chillz Murdock (MMM) Any other titles you would like to get into???
-
Aitch Cee possibly…trade? LOL
-
Aitch Cee My only other question: Have you been to any cons lately and if so are you doing any more on the east coast this year?
-
Paul Davidson Logan, or i have a real interest in mythology, so i reckon i’d love to draw Thor
-
Paul Davidson This is ithttp://www.millionaireplayboy.com/toys/spidey67.php
Millionaire Playboy : Toys: Collectibles: Toy Biz 64 points of articulation Spider-Man
An on-line magazine for collectible toys, comic books and video games. We also cover the Millionaire Playboy lifestyle.
-
Paul Davidson Thor, Cap, Wolverine, Fantastic four for the sci-fi element
-
Shaun Chillz Murdock (MMM) That’s a cool figure!!!
-
Dionisis Tavakis Tell us about your curent work. What are you preparing for us?
-
Shaun Chillz Murdock (MMM) Sweet. In reference to Aitch Ceequestion will you be doing any UK conventions??
-
Aitch Cee (we are trying to get paul out of the house)
-
Paul Davidson Been to a few cons……last big one was Kapow. My editor at marvel has suggested coming New York comic con…..always too busy with deadlines on their books
Paul Davidson I’m taking on more X-Men Legacy
-
-
Paul Davidson UK maybe Thought Bubble
-
Paul Davidson Actually drawing Dredd for 2000AD for a couple of weeks then back to Marvel books
Aitch Cee hey!! Come to Baltimore Comic COn!!! first week of September!!!
-
Shaun Chillz Murdock (MMM) awesome wanna go there, LSCC has been great so far. X Men Legacy has been great!!! What’s it like working with Simon??
-
Paul Davidson Would love to get to the States, more…….love it there. Si is a top bloke……….crazy ideas………when i did X-Club with him it was a blast
-
Dionisis Tavakis How hard is it to put a writer thoughts on paper? With who was tougher to work with and who you had most fun with?
-
Shaun Chillz Murdock (MMM) Loved X Club!!! Love when the delve into the more obscure characters. How are you finding portraying Legions crazy little mind???
-
Paul Davidson Shaun Chillz Murdock Legion is one strange dude…… hard to turn words into images sometimes, but it’s a fun challenge
Aitch Cee Paul, what are buying habits of comic lovers like in Europe? Do they buy more monthly books do you know or more trades?
-
Paul Davidson Si’s scripts are the most challenging and the most exciting at the same time……..i think i’m finding his wavelength
-
Shaun Chillz Murdock (MMM) Yes he has one or two sub Personalities. It’s nice they using characters like Blindfold and Chamber. Do you take inspiration for previous depictions of these characters???
-
Paul Davidson Aitch Cee that, i’m not sure about………me personally, i buy trades…i know there’s an argument to support the monthlies, but i don’t get to the comic shop as much as i’d like, so i wait…..but i have friends who buy the monthlies
-
Shaun Chillz Murdock (MMM) I’m a monthly guy. I order mine from Dublin of all places lol. Free shipping too. I have no local comic shop
-
Aitch Cee ^^yes, I think I am gravitating to doing that myself. I don’t feel as much of a need to have floppies unless it’s something i want signed. Do you think that the trend may actually turn that way?
-
Shaun Chillz Murdock (MMM) Your still reading comics then Paul?? Any favourites?? And how far behind current events are you??
-
Jake Zimmanck Shaun Murdock bot to far from london im sure they got lcs
-
Shaun Chillz Murdock (MMM) Ya Joking Right Jake?? Lol. Nothing mate. Nearest to me is 20+ miles
Jake Zimmanck Same w me mines 0 mins to drive to
-
Paul Davidson Someone like Mignola doesn’t put the cover art in the trades. I read something lately that numbers were growing on monthlies……..i suppose there’s digital, then the publisher takes less of a risk and publishes a trade, based on digital demand……..really not sure……..i try not to get caught up in all of that
Dionisis Tavakis we have many artists in the group,do you have any advice to give them?
-
Jake Zimmanck 30^*
-
Shaun Chillz Murdock (MMM) What’s next for you after Legacy??? Anything else in the pipeline???
-
Paul Davidson I read comics all of the time…….i’m not up to date with all of the Marvel titles. As of late, i’ve been looking backwards and searching older european stuff. Also, managed to track down an old series by Eclipse from the mid 80’s called ‘ Zooniverse ‘ that really made me want to draw comics. i’m trying to find that little spark to maybe create my own book……….but i’ll still draw for Marvel…… oh, and i’ll read anything by Mignola……..
-
Shaun Chillz Murdock (MMM) With that in mind then Paul, would you get a writer in, or do the whole lot yourself???
-
Dionisis Tavakis Seems you’ve read a lot of stuff, and getting to know you, with wich Marvel character(s) would you describe yourself?
-
Paul Davidson Dionisis Tavakis sure, i suppose the best advice on breaking in…….decide which book you’d be good on ( X titles or Hulk etc ) put together a kick arse couple of pages and send it to the editor of that book…..if he sees potential, they’ll send test scripts out to you for training. C B Cebluski is the talent scout, so a good person to contact. But as for the art. Normal people with expression is a must…………not something i’ve cracked, as we all have insecurities with our art……….simple and clean storytelling to begin with……….Alex Toth said it very well POINTS TO KEEP IN MINDAs I try to do! (And often fail, I might add!)
By Alex Toth
• Eliminate the superfluous, the unnecessary. Be lazy!• Edit your art continuously, at every stage. Save work!• Focus on the remaining (important) picture elements.• Emphasize what IS important in a scene. Save drawing!• Isolate such key elements, as one does in a view finder).• Closeups only when needed: face(s) — for mood and expression, and objects — small, difficult to distinguish in other ways.• To set a scene, a place, to establish a locale, etc., go to a wide shot, angles okay (down/up, etc.) — but again, simply!• Then, cut to tighter shots — pace them, for interest, etc… (wide/one shot/two shot/group shot/close-up/tight close-up).• Establish light source, if need be, for dramatic mood and for blacks, drop shadows, etc., on figures & objects and walls, as correctly places as you can make ’em!• Eliminate such light/shadow work in other shots.• Simplify, simplify, simplify throughout!• Remember, some scenes WILL and MUST be pedestrian, unimportant, and dull — because they are “bridges” between key storytelling scenes. As in any storytelling form, movies, TV, books, plays, music, opera, painting, etc., you can’t knock ’em dead with EVERY shot. Remember, this is what gives PACE to a story, visual commas and periods in a pictorial “paragraph” or “sentence”! These are the resting places in an otherwise moving storm! USE them! Without fear!• Some such “rests” or “pauses” can be heightened in pictorial interest by way of a pretty scene of quiet mood — if your locale allows! Don’t stretch logic to do it!• By learning to eliminate unnecessary objects, figures, and backgrounds, etc., you can focus on what is left to draw in the shot — and draw it well enough to “carry” the shot!• In other words: strip it all down to essentials and draw the hell out of what is left!• All of this advice is based on Roy Crane’s critiques of MY work — and he is absolutely correct, on ALL points!• In the Wash Tubbs and Captain Easy strips and in Buz Sawyer, with Sundays focused on pal Roscoe Sweeny, his work of fifty-odd years demonstrates its validity! In his work, as in no other of his contemporaries’ offerings, you will find an extraordinary sense of balance, in his design of space within a panel frame, a strip, or a page! His simplicity allows us to see the use of shapes within his pictures, how they create tension, action, or repose…clearly!• He avoided confusing details!• To quote something just read: “To ADD to TRUTH only SUBTRACTS from it!!! (Isn’t that beautifully put?)• Authenticate devices, objects, machines, locales, furniture, etc….to lend credibility!• As Sickles put it: “Understand how a thing is built and you’ll have no trouble drawing it through!”• Spend more time THINKING — about WHAT and what NOT to draw, and HOW — and you’ll do LESS DRAWING!• PRE-plan, PRE-think…Thus, save work and time!• But — whatever you DO, do it WELL!• TELL THE STORY AS BEST YOU CAN! Bend to that storm!• Be honest to it. Give it all you’ve got! Enhance it!• Study films, photographs, paintings, etc., for composition! For cutting, cropping out of nonessentials, pacing, punch, economy, forceful and direct impact. But also for beauty and subtlety — tension, suspense, action, humor, light and dark, balance, line vs. mass, ad infinitum. USE IT ALL!• Analyse everything you see — be critical. Positively so!• See — observe — remember! Build up your memory file!• Good luck —
Best — Alex
-
Jake Zimmanck Thats real kool^
-
Aitch Cee Ok guys, I gotta go…paul thanks for the answers and the add and uuuhhh get more toys!! BYE!
-
Shaun Chillz Murdock (MMM) Wow!!! Nicely put on the advice point!!!
-
Paul Davidson Nothing set up at Marvel……..i tend to do a little run, then i’ll do something for 2000AD or an illustration job……..for survival as a freelancer, i don’t like to have all of my eggs in one basket, so i work in different areas of illustration……comic books to illustration for publishers……it’s a better way to make sure you’re always working
-
Dionisis Tavakis Perfect advices!!!These will help a lot of ppl, thank you!!!
-
Paul Davidson I’m hoping to draw and write a creator owned…..but i might have to get a writer involved if i start to panic……at the end of the summer i’m considering working on thishttps://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10200958076697157&set=a.4449713043956.317999.1323372351&type=3&src=https%3A%2F%2Ffbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.net%2Fhphotos-ak-prn1%2F902170_10200958076697157_86167205_o.jpg&smallsrc=https%3A%2F%2Ffbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.net%2Fhphotos-ak-prn1%2F557935_10200958076697157_86167205_n.jpg&size=821%2C1134
